Why does domestic abuse awareness matter?
More than 1 in 3 women (nearly 43.5 million) and more than 1 in 6 men (20.7 million) have experienced sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetimes. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.
Prevention requires awareness, education, honest conversations, resources, and communities willing to recognize the signs and support people experiencing abuse. That's what Akhtober is about.
What is Akhtober and why October?
Akhtober is Alpha Lambda Mu's national philanthropic campaign—a month-long movement where every ALM chapter nationwide comes together to fundraise and volunteer for local women's shelters and organizations aiding domestic abuse survivors.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), when advocates, allies, survivors, and communities commit to ending this epidemic.
Who are your partner organizations?
Peace in the Home supports domestic abuse survivors with crisis services, shelter, legal aid, counseling, transitional housing, and economic empowerment programs.
Ma'ruf Dallas provides refugee support, housing assistance, job placement, financial management, food security, and family stabilization services.
What does my donation actually fund?
Your donation goes directly to the case workers at our partner organizations, Peace in the Home and Ma'ruf, who are on the front lines supporting domestic abuse survivors. Rather than a generic fund, every dollar is deployed by these trusted professionals to cover immediate, tangible needs as families transition to safety. Specific allocations are determined based on survivor needs.
Is my contribution Zakat-eligible?
Yes. All funds raised through this campaign are distributed directly. These funds go toward supporting eligible recipients (such as families fleeing domestic abuse, unhoused individuals, and those in critical financial distress) to cover essential living needs, shelter, food, and emergency relief, making your contributions Zakat-eligible.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes. The Alpha Lambda Mu Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity. Donations are tax-deductible.
Does my employer offer donation matching?
Many employers offer matching gift programs that can double or even triple your impact.
Contact akhtober@alphalambdamu.org if you need assistance with documentation.
Can I donate anonymously?
Yes. Anonymous donations remain tax-deductible and will not appear on public donor recognition lists.
Can I donate a different amount?
Absolutely. Impact tiers are examples only. You may donate any amount.
